Fish the Waters Inside the Reef

Start your day early and head into the waters inside the Belize Barrier Reef for a hands-on fishing adventure guided by experienced local knowledge.

After catching fresh bait, set out in search of species such as snapper, grouper, and jack, while your guide shows you how to cast, set the hook, and handle your rod when a fish strikes.

You may also try trolling for barracuda, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and bonito as you explore the beautiful waters off Placencia. Along the way, stop at one of the nearby cayes for a relaxing island lunch before returning to the Placencia Municipal Pier, where your guide can prepare your catch of the day.

The fishing was exciting, the snorkeling was beautiful, and the entire day was filled with laughter, great memories, and outstanding hospitality.

Get ready for a day on the water with helpful answers about fishing experience, target species, what to bring, and what happens to your catch.
Not at all. Inner reef fishing is suitable for beginners as well as experienced anglers. Your guide will show you the basics, including how to cast, set the hook, handle the rod, and reel in your catch, making it a hands-on way to experience fishing in Belize. Local Placencia charters similarly welcome both beginners and experienced anglers.
Depending on the season, conditions, and what’s biting, inner reef fishing around Placencia can offer opportunities to catch snapper, grouper, jacks, barracuda, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and other reef species. Your day may combine bottom fishing and trolling to target different fish, although catches are never guaranteed.
Southern Belize Explorers provides the fishing gear, food, and drinks, so you mainly need to prepare for a day in the Caribbean sun. We recommend bringing a hat, polarized sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, comfortable lightweight clothing, a towel, and a camera. You're also welcome to bring your own fishing gear if you prefer.
Some fish caught during the trip may be kept and prepared for you at the end of the day, provided they meet Belize’s current fisheries regulations. Certain species are protected or subject to size, seasonal, catch-and-release, or location-specific restrictions, so your guide will advise you on what can legally and responsibly be kept.
