About the Silk Cayes

The Silk Cayes, also known as the Queen Cayes, are part of a protected marine reserve along the Belize Barrier Reef, approximately 22 miles off the coast of Placencia. Surrounded by clear Caribbean waters, white sandy beaches, and coconut palms, the three small islands—North, Middle, and South Silk Caye—offer access to a remarkably diverse marine environment and some of Southern Belize’s most memorable snorkeling.

Silk Cayes Snorkeling FAQs

Prepare for your adventure with helpful answers about snorkeling, marine life, what to bring, and what makes the Silk Cayes such a remarkable place to explore.
You don't need to be an experienced snorkeler to enjoy the Silk Cayes. Your guide will help you get comfortable with the equipment and provide guidance in the water, allowing you to focus on experiencing the reef and its marine life.
The Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve protects an exceptionally rich marine ecosystem. Depending on conditions, snorkelers may encounter tropical reef fish, rays, sea turtles, nurse sharks, corals, and other marine species. The wider reserve is also an important spawning area for numerous fish species.
Come prepared for a day in the sun and water. We recommend bringing a swimsuit, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a camera or waterproof phone case for capturing the day. Similar Placencia snorkeling excursions also recommend a cover-up or rash guard and reusable water bottle.
The reserve forms part of the Belize Barrier Reef and was established to protect the area's important spawning aggregation site, marine biodiversity, and the tourism value of the Silk Cayes. Gladden Spit supports more than 30 species of spawning fish and is also known for seasonal whale shark aggregations, making the wider reserve particularly important for marine conservation.
