About South Water Caye

South Water Caye Marine Reserve is one of Belize’s largest marine protected areas, encompassing approximately 117,875 acres of the Belize Barrier Reef and surrounding marine habitats. Established in 1996, the reserve protects an extraordinary combination of coral reefs, mangrove cayes, and extensive seagrass meadows that provide habitat for fish, lobster, queen conch, and other marine life.

You don’t need to be an experienced snorkeler to enjoy South Water Caye, although basic swimming ability is recommended. The clear, sheltered waters and proximity of the reef make the area particularly well suited to snorkeling, and your guide will help you get comfortable before exploring.
South Water Caye Marine Reserve protects coral reefs, extensive seagrass meadows, mangrove habitats, and an impressive diversity of marine life. While every outing is different, you may encounter colorful reef fish, corals, lobster, conch, rays, and other Caribbean marine species while snorkeling.

We recommend bringing your swimsuit, towel, hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, and a light cover-up for sun protection. A reusable water bottle and waterproof camera or phone case are also great additions for a full day on the caye.

Yes. South Water Caye is a protected marine environment, so visitors should take care not to touch, collect, or disturb coral and marine life. Within conservation zones, snorkeling is a non-extractive activity, and guides are required to explain the reserve's rules before guests enter the water.
