About Monkey River

Monkey River is where rainforest, river, mangroves, and the Caribbean coast come together to create one of Southern Belize’s rich natural environments. Its riverine forests provide habitat for black howler monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, tropical birds, and many other species, while the river connects inland ecosystems with the coast.

Monkey River Tour FAQs

Prepare for your journey into the wild with helpful answers about wildlife, the jungle hike, what to wear, and what to expect along the way.
You don’t need to be an experienced snorkeler to enjoy South Water Caye, although basic swimming ability is recommended. The clear, sheltered waters and proximity of the reef make the area particularly well suited to snorkeling, and your guide will help you get comfortable before exploring.
Lightweight, comfortable clothing is recommended, along with sturdy walking shoes for the jungle portion of the experience. Bring insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses; long pants and a lightweight long-sleeved shirt can provide additional protection from insects and vegetation. Binoculars and a camera are also great additions for wildlife watching.
We recommend bringing your swimsuit, towel, hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, and a light cover-up for sun protection. A reusable water bottle and waterproof camera or phone case are also great additions for a full day on the caye.
